Learning About Months and Seasons

Kids Mobile Craft

This is a simple craft that focuses on the Months with corresponding month number. It also helps children learn which months are in each season.

Younger children will need some help putting this together. More advanced students/older students will be able to make it themselves.

We’ve included a printable template to make things easier for you. Find the link for the templates at the bottom of this post.

Materials Needed:

  • 13 – 12 inch long pieces of Yarn or String Cut
  • Paper Plate or a Lid from a Recycled Container (be creative)
  • PDF Printable of Months, Numbers, Pictures
  • Scissors
  • Hole Punch
  • Tape or Glue (I prefer tape because no drying time)
  • Ruler
  • Crayons, Markers, Colored Pencils (optional)

Materials Needed for Months Mobile Craft

Let’s Get Started

Punch 12 evenly spaced holes around the outer edge of the plate. Decorate now if desired (see note and example below). Set aside.

Mobile Craft: Punch Holes in Plate

Note: If you want to enhance the project for more advanced/older students, use a paper plate as the top then divide the plate into quarters and decorate one quarter for each season. This also makes it easier to punch the holes without measuring.  Then follow the directions making sure to place the months in the correct season.

We also give you a printable image with the seasons already divided to make it easier for younger students. They just have to cut out the circle and glue it to the plate.

Kids Month Mobile Craft Template

Cut out each piece from the Printable.
There will be a number, month name, and picture for each month.

Take one piece of yarn and lay it out vertically on the table. Place the number (ex: 1) about 2 inches from the top of the yarn and secure with either a dab of glue or piece of tape.

Place the name of the month (ex: January) about 1 inch below the number and secure with glue or tape.

Place the picture (ex: snowman) about 1 inch below the month name and secure with glue or tape. Look at the finished picture at top of post for guidance.

Tape month, number, and picture to Yarn

Thread the top of the yarn (with pieces attached) through one of the holes you previously punched out. Tie a knot at the top and secure with tape or a dab of glue for durability. Repeat for each month.
(optional) If you’re going to use the seasons make sure to match the correct month to each season.

Thread Yarn through holes in plate

Punch hole in center of plate to add yarn so you can hang your mobile.

Poke Hole in center of plate to Hang

Admire the finished project with your little one!
Enhance the learning experience by pointing to the months of the year on your mobile as you listen to the Months of the Year song.

Kids Boost Their Memory: Learn Months of the Year

Months of the Year Memory Game

Months of the Year Memory Game

Playing a game is always a fun way to reinforce a skill or idea that your child is learning. The classic matching game is a good ‘go to’ game because it’s easy to put together and requires very little in the way of supplies. If someone gets a match, ask what events come up in that month. When your little one gets September, you might talk about how school starts or how you like to pick apples in September. This is also an easy center activity for a classroom since the rules are straightforward and the cards can be stored in a baggie and reused.

** A variation of the game could be played using two sets of the cards with the month names.

This would be great for younger players as they can match letter for letter.

Making Months Meaningful – It’s All About Making Connections

2014 August 28

Teaching Kids Months of the Year

“Tell me and I forget, teach me and I may remember, involve me and I learn.” – Benjamin Franklin

For your little one, knowing the months of the year goes beyond just knowing the date. By making connections to each month, your child can become excited about their world and make long lasting memories.

Ideas for making connections:

Months of the Year

  • At the beginning of each month, talk about birthdays, holidays, and events that will be happening.
  • At the end of each month, take a ‘memory walk’ and talk about the busy month. Remember the big things like birthdays and the little things like playing in the sprinklers.
  • While riding in the car or playing, play Billy Gorilly’s “Months of the Year” song. When the current month comes up throw your hands in the air and wave them around! Let that energy flow.
  • Make your own monthly calendar showing what events are coming up that month. Add matching pictures, clip art, stickers, etc. to dress it up.

Billy Gorilly Helps Kids Learn Months of the Year

2014 August 26

Just in Time for Back-to-School

Well, it’s “Back to School” time and, if you’re anything like me, you’re probably thinking about how much more you could get done if you only had a little help. There’s always so much to do, and never enough time. From the little things like “what’s for lunch?”, to the big things like making sure your kids learn everything they’ll need to enjoy a happy, fulfilling life.

As this school year starts and your kids get into their learning routine, why not let Billy Gorilly be your new helper. After all, his fun personality and down to earth outlook on life will have kids learning what they need to know, while they think they’re busy having a good ol’ time. Like in his new “Months of the Year” video, where your kids will learn the month names, numbers, seasons, and fun facts about the number twelve…. all in a  cartoon they’ll want to watch and sing along with over and over again.

Creating an atmosphere where your kids can learn and grow and thrive doesn’t have to be difficult or overwhelming. Just keep it simple, enlist the help of trusted friends, and have some fun with it all. This video is also perfect for kids learning english. Great for the ESL classroom!

We’re Trying Something New

This is the first time I’ve embedded a Facebook post (including the video) into a blog post. I’m not really sure if this is a good thing or bad. The only way to find out is to try it.

I will also put an image below the embedded post with a simple link to the video so you can go directly to YouTube and watch it. I want to make it as easy as possible for you to see the video. If you have any troubles I would love to hear about it. If I don’t know what is going wrong, I can’t fix it.

News Release: Billy Gorilly Musicartoonio for Early Learners

2014 August 20

Flying Kitten Music and Kingman Publishing are excited to announce the release of the new Billy Gorilly musicartoonio “Months of the Year”. The animated video is the first in a series of miniature movies for early learners, that combines the catchiness of a music video with the silliness of a kid’s cartoon. Within a four minute time span, Billy and his pals entertain and educate children about months, seasons, calendars, and even a few quirky bits pertaining to the number 12.

The video was written, produced, and directed by the husband and wife team of John & Tamara Maellaro. The true labor-of-love brings into clear focus the artistic vision of both the Maellaros and executive producer Charles Hardman. Being leaders in the field of children’s educational entertainment for more than a decade made them perfectly suited to create the strikingly fresh mix of smarts wrapped in fun. The incredible talents of illustrator/designer Joshua Perry were also enlisted to give the video its unique and beautiful look.   The official release date is set for August 21, 2014. The video will be available at Billy Gorilly Kids TV on YouTube, Vimeo, and BillyGorilly.com

Heavy Hearts

Tulips from Charles Hardman's Garden

It is with unimaginably heavy hearts that we need to tell you of the passing of our dear friend and business partner Charles Hardman. He, being an exceptional example of a loving and caring person, as well as one of the original co-creators of the Billy Gorilly characters, will be deeply missed. His spirit and creativity have always been and will always be inextricably rooted in what we do. We hope that you will keep his family in your thoughts and prayers during this difficult time.
